What’s the Big Deal…?

I am a little surprised at all the reaction to President Obama announcing that he supports same-sex marriage. I wish I could be surprised at the intolerance in the comments of those opposed to it. I don’t understand how it really affects any person who isn’t gay. All it means is same-sex couples can have the same rights and the same chance at happiness as everyone else. Although anyone that thinks getting married will make them happy is a little nuts!

As a country, we have a long history of inequality…which is a little ironic for a country that says it’s people are free. Long have minorities, women, gay and transgendered people been denied basic human rights. Each time, we take steps to correct these injustices. The time has really come in this country for us to show that we really do stand for freedom…that we really do believe in equal rights. We need to stop the hatred and teach our children love, dignity for all, and equality. It is an important time in the history of our country…we must get it right!

Very well said Craig. I didn’t really think it was all that great of an interview with the President. I think if somebody believes something they can just come out and say it without beating around the bush or stuttering or talking around the point. Such are politicians though, and if his supporters want to celebrate it as a great job by him that is fine. Government has been given to much power, everything is politicized by all of them, and here we are in 2012 still debating what type of people get the right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness….when all of us had it all along regardless of race, sex, or religion. It is government that takes it away, this should be a non issue. I don’t even believe the States of the authority to deny somebody the right to be married let alone having the Federal Government take a stance on it. We as Americans truly need to decide what it actually means to be an American, why this country was founded in the first place, and run like hell back towards it. Great topic.

    Craig,

I love your post. I can’t understand why this is such a big deal to so many people. As long as we don’t break a law, or hurt someone, aren’t we all entitled to pursue our notion of happiness. Who cares if that means same sex or opposite sex. Seriously, pursuing any kind of marriage in today’s world seems crazy to me, but hey…to each his/her own. Because we are such an individualistic society, I think there are those that like to have control over what other people can and can’t do.

Come on folks. Let’s let people find their bliss, and why shouldn’t everyone be treated equal in ALL things?

Thanks for opening the conversation, Craig!

I hope at some point in the future – hopefully in our lifetime – those who share the view that marriage can only be between a man and a woman will all look back and feel greatly embarrassed. If so, they too will have evolved.
